Part of the John Lewis refurbishment 2012.
City Centre Milton Keynes.
As part of the new refurbishment at John Lewis centre Milton Keynes 2012, MDC Landscapes Ltd was asked to forward some simple yet effective ideas; in order to create a more pleasing view from the restaurants main window. Ideas had to be kept both simple and as light weight as possible due to structural limitations, so the design incorporated extensive roof garden substrate for planting, a lightweight product designed especially for the use on low bearing surfaces (roof tops).
Bespoke aluminium made to measure planters were manufactured, finished in Ral 9011 graphite black and a subterranean irrigation system installed. All air-conditioning units that created an eye-sore have now been hidden from sight, and the whole installation stretches 23 linear metres along the path of one of the buildings structural beams to compensate for the roofs load bearing limits. Planting included design principles of texture, movement, height, structure, colour, and being beneficial to wildlife.
